Besides being a psychologist and sexologist, Bill is an ordained American Baptist clergyperson. For over 30 years Bill was on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in the Human Sexuality Program. In 1998, he moved the program to Widener University along with the faculty and many of the students. Widener offers the only university-based doctoral program in human sexuality in the world. After moving to Widener, Bill helped to expand the program to offer several joint degree programs with the Center for Education, the Institute for Clinical Psychology, and the Center for Social Work Education. The Center for Sexuality and Religion and the Council for Relationships are both affiliated with the Human Sexuality Program. Bill retired as Director of the program in August 2006. He was named as Scholar-in-Residence. The William R. Stayton Award for Applied Leadership in Human Sexuality will be granted to an outstanding Doctoral Degree graduate from the Program in Human Sexuality who has demonstrated significant leadership in the field of Human Sexuality as a student, a scholar and a practitioner. According to Widener University, "this award will be given annually in perpetuity to honor the spirit of dedication and service that Dr. Stayton has embodied throughout his esteemed career as well as the contributions of Dr. Stayton to both the University and to the field of Human Sexuality." In November 2006, Bill accepted the position of Executive Director of the Center for Sexuality and Religion.
Bill is a former president of SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States) and AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists). He has also served a Board Chair for Planned Parenthood of Southeastern PA. In 2000, Philadelphia Magazine chose him as one of a "100 Best Docs for Women" and in August 2001, in the Best of Philly" edition there was a major story about Bill"s life entitled "Minister of Sex." Bill has appeared in several documentaries and numerous radio and television programs throughout the world. He has over 55 publications on sexuality issues. He has been married to Kathleen Boucher for 53 years. They have four children and four grandsons.
