QUESTION

Submit Your Question

I am 44 years old, and I want to know about the effectiveness of penis enlargement tablets or sex efficiency drugs. Should they be used and do they have any long term side effects? Can they be effective at any age? Can penis size be enlarged?

This question was submitted to the HSAB by an actual iFriends user, and answered for recent publication.

ANSWER

Answered by Larry Siegel, M.A.

The penis enlargement industry has become a multi-billion dollar industry, even going so far as to sponsor a NASCAR team. It is an industry that is based on brilliantly manipulative marketing and meaningless catch phrases (what does “male enhancement” actually mean? Or “clinically proven?”), not by the merit of any of the products. The bottom line is that it is physiologically impossible to take any kind of pill, use any type of cream, or stretch the penis in any way that will make it bigger. Even surgery to enlarge the penis is not effective. In the SexualHealth.com section on Men’s Health, you will find an article I wrote about this a few years ago. I can say that between the time I wrote that article and today, the only thing that has improved about these products is their marketing. The fact is, most men are already of sufficient size but are somehow led to believe that it is never enough. So what are these products? All these products are based on simple vitamin and herbal formulations and, because none of them have ever been evaluated by the FDA, there is no way to either validate any claims of effectiveness or legitimize the components or potency of the ingredients. The most popular products on the market are simply a blend of vitamins and minerals (such as niacin, zinc, and copper) along with a variety of herbs that have no demonstrated effect on sexual functioning; especially when taken in supplement form. Herbs such as horny goat weed, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, avena sativa and maca root have been touted for years as prosexual herbs but there is no evidence to support any claim of this. Ginseng and ginkgo biloba have, indeed, been shown to help facilitate some increase in blood flow, but that occurs throughout the body, not directly to the penis. Similarly, many of these products also contain the amino acid L-arginine. This amino acid is implicated in the natural erectile process, but there is no evidence to support the notion that it will improve erectile function when taken in supplement form.

The advantage these companies have is that they are not “burdened” by the necessity to scientifically back up their claims, since they are not classified as drugs. This is a great disadvantage for the consumer, however, in that in addition to being taken advantage of, there is no research on the long-term impact of taking such products. In short, these products have not been researched so we have no real information on their safety. We already know that many “natural” products can have significant negative interactions with a variety of medications, such as antidepressants and heart medications, so this must be a factor in deciding whether to use them or not. Others, particularly those that contain yohimbine, may also produce side effects as dizziness, nausea, and headache, and you should consult with your physician if you are taking any other medications. Most disturbing of all, however, is the fact that some of these products illegally contain the drug sildenefil or tadalafil, the active ingredient in Viagra and Cialis, respectively, that can cause fatal interactions with heart medications.

There really is no effective way to increase the size of one’s penis. Medications like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra may improve a man’s ability to get erections (provided there is enough mental and physical stimulation), but do not affect penis size or desire. If there is a medical problem that prevents you from getting an erection, perhaps this is something you may want to speak with your doctor about. Accepting the strengths you already have and looking for new ways to enjoy yourself and your partner are the keys to maintaining sexual happiness. The solutions are in your head, not in a bottle.
